Parasailing over Gravenhurst’s Lake Muskoka …

When I was a kid, I had a love-hate relationship with the ferris wheel.

OK, fine. I still do. I wouldn’t say I’m actively afraid of heights, but I’ve always been wary of them. Not the elevation itself, merely the fear of falling.

And that’s why I never thought I’d agree to go parasailing. But I guess you should never say never.

We hopped onto the yellow winch boat along with a family of four from Minden and enjoyed the ride out onto the water, pumping ourselves up to the music playing.

I told the family that they could go up first, mostly because I was scared and wanted to watch someone else do it before me.

It was amazing to watch their ascent, the blue and yellow parachute billowing in the bright blue sky as they dangled their feet and waved their arms around.

It almost looked like the captain, Craig Bowker, was flying a kite, and they were the ribbons dangling off the end.

Before we knew it, it was our turn. I tried to suppress the pit in my stomach as we were hooked into our harnesses and life jackets and sat on the platform of the winch boat, preparing for takeoff.

But as we were reeled up, my worries suddenly went away (for the most part).

It was beautiful, having a bird’s-eye view of the Canadian Shield, the shimmering water, and the boat looking like a bath toy from above.

How was I so calm? How was I not hyperventilating?

It was also surprisingly quiet up there — besides Leila and me singing off-key.

It’s funny how it took me being launched hundreds of feet in the air to be reminded that I should go outside my comfort zone more often.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, there are still opportunities for joy, for laughter and for adventure and I am incredibly grateful that I get to seek out these adventures in Muskoka.

“You have a great team of ‘coaches’…

“I wanted to send you a quick note to thank you once again for all of your help making our day of watersports activities on August 19th such a success.

You have a great team of ‘coaches’ there and I know that everyone had a really great time participating in all of the activities. If you’re ever looking for someone to provide a reference for site, you or your team, please don’t hesitate to ask, I’d be honoured to give you a glowing recommendation!
Have a great rest of summer and happy skiing!”
